The Green Flash - Fact or Fiction?
Posted in: Blog, Maui by NORBERG on June 2, 2009
One of the amazing things about Maui and Hawaii in general that you’ve probably heard about is the GREEN FLASH! This is when, supposedly, the sun and ocean meet at sunset and a quick flash of green transpires.
Is this True?
Yes! Personally, I can attest to it happening. Does it happen often? No. Having watched hundreds, if not thousands, of sunsets over the water on Maui, I’ve personally only seen it happen a few times. I think this is what makes it so exciting, mysterious, and grand. Its elusiveness isn’t the only thing that makes it difficult for people to believe. Often, when it does happen, not everyone catches it. The Green Flash happens in a blink of the eye just as the sun disappears into the ocean. You won’t see anything like what was shown in the Pirates of the Caribbean movie, but it is something to remember.
Is this photo real?
For those curious: the photo on the left is not an actual picture of the Green Flash at sunset. We manipulated it with photoshop. We’ve yet to capture the phenomena on camera. Give us a few more years…
